About

The Herbert Biogeochemistry Lab investigates the cycling of key trace elements at the seafloor with a focus on glaciated environments. We quantify fluxes between the sediment and ocean and characterize the drivers of sediment biogeochemistry in the context of climate change. Connections between the cryosphere and marine trace metal cycling across timescales are also a focus in the lab. We collect sediment and water samples at sea, from Antarctica to the Arctic, and analyze their geochemistry in the lab to understand the biological, geological, and chemical processes occurring in the study site.
